Energy boost or time-suck? This question is often asked by those who, due to everyday stress or sleepless nights, seek a breather in the form of a short midday nap to recharge their batteries. New motivation, increased performance and vital energy are the hoped-for goals. But does a daytime rest really have the desired effect?
Short rest periods for more health and vitality
A power nap is a sleep break, also called a minute nap or short nap, of about 20 to 30 minutes. It is intended to provide the body and mind with new energy quickly and effectively, according to the experts. Many people use power naps to revitalise, regenerate and increase their productivity during the day. Studies have shown that short naps can improve concentration as well as cognitive performance. They are also said to help lower blood pressure and strengthen the immune system. Last but not least, sleep experts recommend a short power nap as a daily ritual to boost vitality and stay healthy. The emphasis, however, is on short. In contrast to a longer nap, the healthy in-between nap is by no means intended to seduce you into a deeper sleep phase. It is only intended to help overcome short-term states of exhaustion.

Wake up better
Those who dream are already in REM sleep, the stage after deep sleep. This means that proper sleep has already begun, which should be avoided. Because this only intensifies the initial midday slump. The result: the body feels more tired and worn out than before, and the eyes seem even more tired. To wake up refreshed, it is important not to snooze too long and to set the alarm clock in good time. For an effective power nap, make sure to create a pleasant environment that is quiet, dark, and comfortable. You should lie down comfortably and try to switch off. This often works best in the bed at home with a cosy favourite pillow and your own mattress.
Simply fall asleep
If you have problems falling asleep, you can also listen to soothing dream-sound relaxation music or do restorative breathing exercises. A tip from professional soldiers: While your eyes are closed, don't think about anything - then you will doze off immediately. This trick works, but it takes training to control your thoughts to that extent. A 30-minute sleep is usually sufficient and should not be exceeded so that body and mind are refreshed without disturbing the sleep cycle. It can be stated: A nap in between promotes health, leads to a greater sense of well-being, and gives you new energy. Sleep well and briefly!
